VOLUNTEER NIGERIA....

Hey guys,

How are we doing? I know it feels like I have gone M.I.A, it is not like that oo, I've had a lot going on with work, social life, family and best of all the projects I am working on.. sometimes I actually consider shutting down this blog. But hey, what would my kids read if I don't have an old blog for them to go through?
A lot has gone on in my life in the past few months, really interesting things I must say. Hopefully, I'll blog about them all.
But this post is special, so feel happy to be reading it :) For those of you on my instagram, twitter, facebook.. e.t.c you must have heard about VOLUNTEER NIGERIA, a Debbie Motilewa initiaive. Basically volunteer Nigeria is set up to bring youths together once every three months to volunteer in a charity of our choice.. We are not a sole foundation of our own; Volunteer Nigeria is created to act as a support foundation for other foundations.

Our first event was on the 10th of August 2013; we visited Mother Theresa Orphanage, Gwarimpa Abuja. We did not just visit, but held a party for the kids. It was a great experience, the first I had engineered, I basically learnt a lot from the experience, the kids had so much fun, we started the day with face painting, then moved on to dancing, dancing, dancing, then games, we had different games in line for the kids; Simon says, musical chairs amongst others. After that the kids had to have their lunch, so the adults took over the game floor; a short game of musical chairs brought out the children in us. It felt so good to play musical chairs after about ten years of not playing it.. We later moved on to drawing; cardboards, pencils and crayons were provided to see the artistic side of the kids. They were asked to draw Barney, well I must say I saw different representations of Barney.....
There was a "mummy/daddy dance for me" competition, were the kids picked adults to dance for them in a bid to win one of our many prizes.
The afternoon ended with a raffle draw for a chance to win two golf sets, which were to be donated to the orphanage.

I was really happy with the turnout. I had a total of 32 guests, which I think is a great number, considering it was the first edition. There were loads of donations, and everyone definitely looked happy; both the kids and adults. The best part of the day was knowing that the visit to the orphanage that day was the first visit to any orphanage by about 10 of the invited guests. Which is one of the aims of the program: creating the spirit of volunteering in the hearts of youths.

I should at this point thank Mother Theresa Orphanage for welcoming Volunteer Nigeria, a Debbie Motilewa Initiative to her home, I am really grateful for believing our vision. And I am really happy with the care given to the kids. I had couple of friends ask me "Deborah, are you sure these children are orphans?" Another friend said "Tell, me the truth Deborah, their parents are coming to get them after the party right?"

I am also grateful to the volunteers; without them the event couldn't have bn half as nice.
And finally.... I am using this opportunity to ask everyone who reads this to be a part of the November edition of Volunteer Nigeria. You can participate in the November edition by: 1. Creating Awareness: tell people you know to tell people they know to tell people the people they know know :D.
Post about the initiative on your blogs, tell people with blogs you know about the initiative, tell newspapers, magazines.. e.t.c
2. Be present in Abuja for the November edition.
3. Make Donations.
